Guides/How Tos

One of the primary objectives of the LUG is to help new users learn how to use and better understand Linux-centric operating systems. In the process, we create user guides, which will be linked here.

Customizing VIM

CPLUG President, pharkas, gave a presentation about the ins and outs of VIM as well as some powerful secrets! Download the presentation outline, the handy reference card for all the commands, and use pharkas' .vimrc to customize VIM to your needs!

Mounting an Encrypted Home Directory

Our own Ryan du Bois has written a guide on keeping your home directory encrypted, and automatically decrypting it when you log in. Here it is.

Defragmenting In Windows

Since defragmenting a disk in Windows can be important before installing Linux (as was made painfully obvious at the last Free Your Machine), we've put together this guide.

Please keep in mind that defragmenting your hard drive is a prerequisite for the upcoming and all future Free Your Machine events.

LUG Wiki

We're organizing a Free Your Machine for the second week of winter quarter and an introductory Linux presentation for the third week of winter quarter. We'd like some help organizing the presentation though- there's a lot of stuff to be covered, and it's going to take some work to get all the information collected.

We've set up a wiki at http://rkas.net/tavi for the Post-FYM presentation material. If you'd like to help us out, feel free to write up information under any of the headers, edit any information that's currently there, or add new stuff that you think is relevant.

If everyone chips in and helps fill out a couple of topics we'll have a very thorough presentation to give to the people who install Linux at next quarter's FYM. The wiki (or at least the information contained within) will also be passed on from year to year in the LUG so that the CPLUG can give an introductory Linux class without a ton of preparatory work.

We're also going to be going over the material in the wiki at the next members meeting and filling out any points that are left blank, so the more that's done now the better.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Post-FYM User Guide

We put together Linux Tips for New Users, to help enrich the Linux experience for new users. We'll try to expand this further, eventually.

Linux Tips For New Users

CPLUG member Ryan Du Bois has contributed a guide for new Linux users, to help them out with basics and some terminal commands. Grab a copy here.
