How to Defragment Your Hard Drive in Windows
For a technical explanation of defragging, look elsewhere. There are plenty of resources online that discuss what defragging does and why certain steps should be taken. The purpose of this tutorial is only to help prepare you for Free Your Machine.

First, if your computer is already on, you should restart it. Then make sure no other programs are running (we mean it). This generally involves exiting or disabling the programs in the system task bar. If you are running Windows XP, remember to expand this section by clicking the left arrow.

Now the easy part: Go to the Start menu, then select Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter.

Different versions of Windows have different interfaces for the Disk Defragmenter, but regardless of your version, you should see a button labeled, "Defragment." Click the button. The process may take a few minutes, or it may take a number of hours, so it would be wise to run it overnight. We also recommend defragmenting at least a couple days before FYM so you have time to resolve any potential problems that you may experience.
